What to pack

Clothing and weather

London weather is unpredictable year-round. Even in summer, temperatures can drop and rain is common. But we’ve also seen hotter summers than usual. Think about paying layers rather than packing for seasons. 

• A waterproof jacket or coat is essential at any time of year
• Comfortable walking shoes, London involves a lot of walking
• Warmer layers for autumn and winter, which arrive quickly
• If you are arriving in July or August, do not assume it will be consistently warm 

Most everyday clothing is easy and affordable to buy in London, so there is no need to overpack, especially if you will be shipping or storing belongings later. 

Electronics and adaptors

The UK uses a distinctive three-pin plug (Type G) that is different from most of the rest of the world. It is one of the most commonly forgotten items. 

• Bring at least one UK plug adaptor, or buy one before you travel.
• Check whether your devices are dual voltage (most modern laptops and phone chargers are) if not, you may need a voltage converter as well 
• A multi-port USB charger with a single UK adaptor is a practical solution for charging multiple devices

Bedding and room essentials

If you are moving into a private rental or shared house, you will almost certainly need to bring or buy your own bedding. Purpose built student accommodation and homestays usually provide it but always check in advance.

Items worth having from day one:

• Towels
• Bedding (duvet, pillow, sheets, duvet cover)
• A padlock (useful for lockers in student buildings or gyms)
• A basic first aid kit including plasters, paracetamol and ibuprofen

These are all readily available in London at affordable prices (Poundland, Primark, and larger supermarkets are good starting points), so if luggage space is limited, buying on arrival is a perfectly reasonable option.
